The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue
by V. E. Schwab
Summary
In 1714, Adeline LaRue runs from an unwanted marriage and bargains with a god who answers after dark. She receives the freedom to live for as long as she wants, but everyone she meets forgets her as soon as she leaves their sight. Addie cannot say her own name or leave a direct mark on the world. She survives by stealing, improvising, and planting ideas that other people turn into art.
The story moves between Addie's three centuries of travel and New York in 2014, where a bookseller named Henry remembers her. That impossible recognition changes the terms of her life and raises a new question about Henry's own history. A long contest also continues between Addie and Luc, the being who granted her wish and expects her eventually to surrender.
Schwab is more interested in memory, art, and loneliness than in explaining the mechanics of immortality. The pace is deliberate, and the repetition is part of the point: Addie can enter thousands of lives but cannot remain in any of them. Anyone expecting a conventional fantasy plot may find it slow; the book puts character and atmosphere first.
