Summary

Circe is born into the household of Helios but lacks the obvious beauty and power of her divine relatives. She discovers witchcraft through trial and error, using herbs and transformation rather than inherited authority. When the gods recognize what she can do, Zeus exiles her to the island of Aiaia.

The novel gathers episodes from Greek myth around Circe's point of view. Prometheus, the Minotaur, Daedalus, Medea, Odysseus, Penelope, and Telemachus enter her life at different stages, but Miller keeps the focus on what those encounters cost Circe. Immortality makes the story expansive without making its heroine static.

Circe is a myth retelling and character study rather than a fast adventure. It examines the narrow roles offered to women in heroic stories and the difficult work of choosing a life outside a powerful family. Detailed knowledge of Homer is not required, though familiarity with the Odyssey adds another layer to the later chapters.
