Summary

Death narrates the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster child sent to live with Hans and Rosa Hubermann near Munich in 1939. Liesel steals her first book before she can read it. Hans teaches her at night, and books become tied to comfort, theft, friendship, and the language used by the Nazi state around her.

The Hubermanns later hide Max Vandenburg, a Jewish man, in their basement. Liesel's relationship with Max develops through stories and drawings while air raids and public persecution move closer to their street. Her friendship with Rudy Steiner provides much of the book's humor and ordinary childhood movement.

Death announces several losses before they occur, so suspense comes from how people reach events the reader already expects. The narration uses lists, interruptions, and bold asides, which can feel unusual at first. The novel contains antisemitic violence, war deaths, bombing, and grief, but it keeps returning to small acts of reading and care rather than treating suffering as distant history.
