The Alchemist
by Paulo Coelho
Summary
Santiago, a young shepherd in Andalusia, has a recurring dream about treasure near the Egyptian pyramids. After meeting a fortune-teller and an old king, he sells his flock and crosses to North Africa. Theft leaves him stranded, so he works for a crystal merchant before joining a caravan across the desert.
The journey is told as a fable. People and events teach Santiago to read omens, distinguish fear from prudence, and pursue what the novel calls his Personal Legend. At an oasis he meets Fatima and an alchemist, both of whom influence how he understands love, risk, and the destination he has chosen.
Coelho's language is simple and openly instructive. Readers often either accept the book's spiritual vocabulary or resist its insistence that the universe helps people who commit to a true purpose. It is short, episodic, and less concerned with historical realism than with making each encounter carry a lesson.
