The Witcher: The Last Wish

Sword of Destiny is the immediate continuation if you want more Geralt rather than a similar mood from another author. Its stories deepen his relationships, especially the bond that will bring Ciri into the larger saga. Like The Last Wish, it mixes monster encounters with bargains, irony, and questions about whether Geralt can remain detached. It is a collection, not the first full-length novel, so expect episodes whose significance accumulates. Choose it before Blood of Elves if you want the emotional groundwork for the later books instead of jumping straight into the political plot.

Joe Abercrombie's The Blade Itself brings a sardonic voice and morally compromised people to a larger ensemble story. Its violence and refusal to give heroes easy virtue will feel familiar after Geralt's choices, but the structure is different: court politics, war, and several points of view replace linked monster-hunting contracts. The humor can be as sharp as Sapkowski's, while the world is less rooted in revised folklore. Read it if the best part of The Witcher was its suspicion of heroic posturing and you are ready for a darker, broader adult fantasy series.

Assassin's Apprentice follows Fitz, a royal bastard trained for covert service while trying to find a place in a court that can use him but rarely protect him. Robin Hobb shares Sapkowski's interest in duty, power, and the cost of being treated as a tool. The tone is more intimate and melancholy than Geralt's wry, episodic adventures; its magic and animal bonds also work differently from Witcher signs and monsters. Choose it if you were drawn to the lonely professional beneath Geralt's reputation and want a slower character study inside an epic series.

The Black Company follows a mercenary unit whose members work for powers that do not fit a clean good-versus-evil map. Glen Cook's terse, soldier-level account connects to The Witcher's moral ambiguity and to the sense that surviving a job does not prove the employer was right. It offers campaigns, sorcery, and group loyalty rather than folklore puzzles or a single monster hunter. The rougher prose and military focus are a real shift. Pick it if Geralt's negotiations and compromised contracts made you want more fantasy told from people paid to do dangerous work.

Elric of Melniboné introduces a troubled swordsman bound to forces he cannot simply master. Michael Moorcock's dark hero and cruel bargains helped shape later antiheroic fantasy, so the connection to Geralt is more in temperament and genre lineage than in plot. Elric's world is stranger and more mythic, with a faster, pulpy rhythm and less of Sapkowski's social satire. Read it if you want an earlier, more operatic version of the cursed warrior whose victories bring costs. It is a shorter, wilder journey than committing to another modern epic series.
