Summary
Nick Carraway moves to Long Island and becomes fascinated by his wealthy neighbor Jay Gatsby, whose parties draw crowds but whose attention is fixed on Daisy Buchanan across the bay. As Nick learns more about Gatsby's past and hopes, the novel exposes the distance between money, status, and the life someone imagines money can restore. F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel is set in the Jazz Age and told through Nick's partial, sometimes uncertain view. Its brief summer story links longing and self-invention to the class boundaries of American society.
