"'star shafts', aligned with various heavenly bodies and intended to assist the soul of the pharaoh on its journey to the stars. However, recent research, such as that set out in 2000 by lan Lawton and Chris Ogilvie-Herald in Giza: The Truth, has shown this to be unlikely. Following Khufu, Egyptology encounters a problem in that the next king, a son of Khufu called Djedefre, would be expected to build his structure on the Giza Plateau as well. In fact, Djedefre chose the high plateau of Abu Roash, some 8 km north of Giza, as the site of his monument. At first glance this is a puzzling choice, and it gets even more confusing if you explore the now mostly destroyed superstructure and substructure of Djedefre's pyramid. Djedefre seems to have decided to return to a much older technique of pyramid construction whereby a large pit is first dug into the bedrock and a superstructure then raised above it. This is a much simpler and more cost-effective technique than the incredibly complex process chosen by his father. So why did Djedefre build his pyramid some distance away from Khufu's and in this comparatively primitive manner? The American archacologist George Reisner provided an answer to this question in the first half of the twentieth century, proposing that there must have been a family dispute which led to Djedefre building his pyramid some distance to the north. There is, however, not a shred of evidence for this quarrel; in fact, we find Djedefre's name associated with some of the structures around the Great Pyramid itself (including the roof slabs which covered the now excavated boat pit), which seems to imply that Djedefre completed the project on behalf of his father. It could be that Djedefre wanted his pyramid to be nearer to the cult centre of Ra at Heliopolis. Djedefre was the first king to use the title 'Son of Ra', and his site at Abu Roash was further north, and hence closer to Heliopolis, than Giza. After Djedefre's reign, two further imposing pyramids were constructed at Giza. First, Khafre, another son of Khufu, built his"
