Eventually she lives with a Native American tribe, marries a Native American man she truly loves, and they have a son together. Later, soldiers attack or capture the tribe. Her Native American husband is killed, and the surviving family members are taken to a military prison or camp. The soldiers realize she is a white woman and release her. She gets a job working in a store to earn her room and board, where she reunites with the outlaw who helped rescue her from the hanging. Later still, the kind brother of her first husband finds her again. Near the end of the book, he asks if she is sure she is ready to return to Texas and run the ranch she inherited.
