Based on your description:

" I vaguely remember the story being about a kitten, potentially living in or coming across a barn at one point. Either he is searching for his mother and is reunited in the end, or it's about the mother teaching the kitten why/how he is special. Maybe both? I think some of the story involved this kitten playing with other animals, possibly while the story (from the mother's perspective I think) spoke about why the kitten is special and loved by the mother and/or its friends. It ended with an image of the kitten and mother cuddling. This was a wide, thin hardback book. The cover was the mother and kitten, or perhaps just the kitten, and one or both of them were grey tabbies. All of the images are illustrated. The title might have the word "cat" in it, but I'm unsure. It might be two or three words long. This detail, I am the most shaky on. My memory may not be 100% correct, as I haven't read this book in probably 20-25 years. I received it for my birthday some time in the mid 90's. It is not Barn Cat by Carol P Saul. I thought it might have been a Nancy Tafuri book, as the "You are Loved, Little One" book resembles what I remember of its style/aesthetic, but this book was specifically about a cat and I haven't found that she's written a book about a cat.
