"Contemporary Romance. FMC becomes heir to land and/or wealthy business when her mother dies. While a minor her father runs it. He remarries a woman who has a daughter close in age. Stepmom treats her cruelly while lavishing stepsis from the proceeds of her inheritance. The father turns a blind eye to it all and agrees to his wife's demands. MFC is sent to a boarding school. She is given the bare minimum. Rarely returns home for holidays or breaks. She befriends a classmate and they become besties. At some point the bestie and/or her family helps FC in some manner, or just shows her affection, and when the father/stepmom find out they ruin the friend's family's business. The friend leaves school and cuts off the friendship. Sometime after graduating, MFC returns home. She continues to be treated like part of the hired help. Eventually, she is old enough to inherit but i don't think she is aware of it. By this time father and stepmom have squandered much of the inheritance and they plot to defraud FMC of her inheritance and have the stepsister marry a wealthy businessman in the industry (i think it is oil but am not sure. I think it revolves around land somehow.) Enter MMC - the wealthy businessman. He is invited to a spend a weekend at their estate with the hope the stepsister will entice him into marriage. However, she is an obnoxious spoiled brat. Instead, despite being hidden away, the MFC and MMC meet. Somehow he discovers her story and he decides to marry her instead. I don't believe it was love at first sight but more of a contractual marriage with a bit of a desire to rescue her. There was a bit of a cat and mouse game to pull of the marriage at the estate behind everyone's back but it is accomplished and the reveal to the father, stepmother and stepsister was very satisfying in my memory. The part of the book that is pretty vague to me is the romance. They obviously fall in love eventually. I also recall that the MMC made it his intention to ruin the father permanently and succeeds. I believe he is arrested for theft and/or fraud. The FMC confronts her father one last time and i recall he pushes her down the stairs in anger. "
