"CHAPTER ONE A FLUTTER of nerves felt more like kamikazes wreaking havoc inside Brandon Hale. As thunder from a midsummer storm crashed overhead, he stared in the mirror set up in the Sunday school classroom at Lantern Beach Community Church. He readjusted his black bowtie and tried to push his apprehension away. He wasn’t usually the nervous type. A heavy hand came down on his shoulder. “You’re not getting cold feet, are you?” He glanced at Maddox King’s image in the mirror. His friend. His colleague. His best man. Brandon shook his head before running his fingers through his short brown hair. “I have no doubt that Finley is the woman I want to spend the rest of my life with.” Maddox’s eyes narrowed as he studied Brandon. “Then why do you look so apprehensive? You’re never apprehensive.” Brandon turned toward his friend, his thoughts still racing. “I just have this bad feeling I can’t put my finger on.” “Just because the fridge went out and the caterer had to scramble to purchase more food for the reception doesn’t mean something else is going to go wrong.” Maddox sliced his hand through the air as if it was settled. “Everything worked out, and your guests will now enjoy chicken fettuccine instead of shrimp scampi.” “Then the wrong flowers were put on the delivery truck, so now we have lilies on the stage instead of roses,” Brandon reminded him. “Not the biggest deal. Not really. I mean, Finley doesn’t exactly seem like the bridezilla type.” “She’s not. But—” Before he could finish his statement, another round of thunder rumbled. He pointed to the ceiling. “It’s storming outside.” “Isn’t that good luck on your wedding day?” “I’ve never heard that one.” His friend was just trying to make him feel better. “Thankfully, I don’t believe in bad omens. Still, I can’t shake this sense of foreboding.” “Your wedding is going to be perfect,” Maddox said. His friend’s reassuring smile did make him feel better. The rest of Brandon’s groomsmen flooded into the room, each looking sharp in their tuxedos. But not as sharp as Maddox, who’d insisted on crocheting his bowtie. It was a running joke in the group, and Brandon had almost asked him not to wear the tie. But Finley had insisted he should, that the piece added some personality to their event. The photographer had already taken pictures of all the groomsmen together—but not of Brandon with Finley. He wanted to see her in her wedding gown for the first time when she walked down the aisle. He’d dreamed about this day for a long time. At that thought, thunder clapped again, and rain began to batter the roof of the church. As local musician Carter Denver began to play “A Thousand Years” on his guitar, Taryn Parsons—their wedding planner and Maddox’s fiancée— appeared in the doorway. Maddox let out a low whistle at the sight of her. Her cheeks flushed, and she quickly straightened his tie before turning to Brandon. “It’s time.” Taryn smiled as she glanced at him. “You look handsome. I can’t wait for you to see Finley. Make sure one of your groomsmen is close to catch you in case your knees buckle. Speaking of knees, don’t lock them. Keep them slightly bent, you don’t want to pass out.” He chuckled. “Noted.” With one more glance at his friends, Brandon stepped out of the classroom, down the hallway, and toward the sanctuary. When he got the signal from Taryn, he stepped onto the stage, joined by Maddox, and his groomsmen, Dylan Granger and Rocco Foster. The church was full, the guests mostly friends from Blackout as well as a few family members. The decorations were simple—two candelabras and those white lilies, which added a sweet scent to the air. Brandon couldn’t wait to get a glimpse of his bride. His beautiful, beautiful bride. Finley Cooper was the smartest, most caring, most beautiful woman he’d ever met. He had let her get away once, and he’d vowed never to do that again. Not by his own volition, at least. The bridesmaids—Katie Logan and Peyton Ellison—started down the aisle, followed by Finley’s childhood friend and maid of honor, Amanda Higgins, "
