The protagonist has unearthed a relic from an obselete caste of fae in the marsh and this allows her to see the true path whilst the other girls die screaming - attacked by the lights which are kind of wraiths in the marsh. The fae on the other side take bets on how long each girl will last. no one has ever successfully crossed before "
