"I read this book when I was a teenager, so mid 1990s. It takes place in England, and it was a friendship between a young man named Richard (I want to say he was 18 years old) and a girl he meets. She is around his age as well and has kind of a loser for a boyfriend. Richard lives with a roommate named Jan and is estranged from his family. At the end of the book, the girl visits Richard's apartment. The door to the apartment is opened by a young man, Jan, who turns out to be Richard's boyfriend. The young man clarifies that his name is pronounced "Yan" because it is Dutch. The girl realizes that Richard is estranged from his family because he came out to them and they shunned him for being gay. It was a bittersweet and tender story and I always wish I could read it again after all these years."
