"A book from the 1960s about a Japanese girl who came to live in America. She was grade-school age and was having some trouble adjusting to her new American Family and school. On her way to school everyday, she passed a bookstore. One day she went in but stayed in the doorway. She heard to bookshop keeper chiding another child for having dirty hands and she ran out the door. Next time, she carefully washed her hands and then went back to the bookstore. the bookshop keeper questioned her about her hands and she held them out, explaining that she'd washed them carefully. He let her read all the books she wanted each time she came in. Later in the story there is a bit about her American family arranging for her to have a prayer tree to honor a Japanese holiday and make her feel more at home."
